My wife and I spend a lovely weekend at the charming Berseba cottage, situated on the farm Berseba near Botrivier in the Western Cape.
I'd say that Berseba cottage biggest selling points are location, location, location! Firstly, at about an hours drive from Cape Town, it is a blip on the fuel and kilometer gauge compared to similar places in (for example) the Cederberg. Secondly, being perched on the north face of a mountain, it has stunning panoramic vistas across the Overberg (see images below). And thirdly, it is the only cabin on the farm. The only person you might see during your stay is Mr. Ian De Kock, but even he does not stay on the farm permanently and he always hoots before coming up :-) So guests have complete privacy and solitude, ideal for a romantic breakaway but also for a family holiday.
The stand out feature of Berseba Cottage is undoubtedly the woodfired Hot Pool. All cares melt away once you are settled in its soothing hot water and enjoy the Overberg serenity. The pool is about 1.5 by 1 meter. The owner claims that 6 people can fit in comfortably, but it is also cozy enough for a couple (me and my wife can vouch for that!). It takes about 4 hours to heat up. Hot Tip (excuse the pun!)... let Ian de Kock know what time you will arrive so that he can light up the fire well in advance. Nothing better than to take the plunge straight after unpacking :-)
There is a small patch of grass next to the pool, which is ideal for the kids while mom and dad are enjoying a well deserved break in the pool! Below the cabin is also ample open space where older kids can safely roam and explore.
The deck has a outside braai (which will have an already packed, ready to light fire when you arrive), comfortable deck chairs and a table with benches.
Inside, the house has two bedrooms, a bathroom (with a bath and a separate shower... one thing I can't stand is a bath and shower combo) and a open plan lounge / kitchen area.
Each bedroom has a queen size bed, a cupboard and a large window with spectacular views. When arriving, it is tempting to plunk into the first bedroom, but it turns out that the second bedroom has a stunning sunrise view. It could be a nice ching chong chai game if you are two couples...
The lounge area has couches and views over the mountains.
The house is well supplied. You are greeted with complimentary milk, rusks, firestarters and a bottle of wine on the table. There is also a honesty bar (if you are really thirsty). You don't have to pack any kitchen utensils, all are provided (see pictures). A nice finishing touch is the selection of boardgames, a first aid kit and binoculars.
The kitchen is equipped with a gas stove, a microwave, a kettle and a fridge/ freezer combo. The bar fridge in the picture is the honesty bar. The wine rack offers a selection of local wines for sale.
There is also an indoor fireplace - for those cold winter evenings ;-)
To conclude, Berseba cottage is a special place. It is highly recommended. In fact I would suggest that you contact the owners as soon as possible because as soon as word of this little gem gets out, there is going to be a long waiting list...
